No material is best for everyone
The choice depends on how you use the car: family or work, children, lots of sun or a garage, and your budget. Here is a summary of the general differences; the exact specification of each product is on its page.
PU synthetic leather (polyurethane)
- Softer feel, closer to leather.
- Breathes a little better than PVC.
- Easy to wipe with a damp cloth.
- Keep strong solvents away so the surface is not affected.
PVC synthetic leather (vinyl)
- Durable and easy to clean, suited to heavy use and work vehicles.
- Can get hotter in direct sun than fabric.
- Usually less soft than PU.
Fabric
- Breathes, and is more comfortable in the heat.
- Stains can soak in if not cleaned quickly.
- Needs more vacuuming and spot cleaning than synthetic leather.
Genuine leather
- A natural material that lasts with regular care using a dedicated cleaner and conditioner.
- Higher price, and quality varies with the hide and finish.
- Can be affected by sun and heat without care.
How to choose
- Family car with children: an easy-to-clean material.
- Lots of heat and sun: fabric or a lighter colour.
- Work vehicle with many passengers: a durable, wipeable material.
